Research
Our goal is to characterize cartilage-derived progenitors, isolate the purer population of cells with enhanced chondrogenic potential, and apply this knowledge toward the evolution of improved therapeutics to regenerate genuine hyaline cartilage. In cartilage tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, the requirement to enhance biological and functional outcomes in improving ongoing treatment and developing new therapeutic strategies remains. Our research focuses on creating and validating osteoarthritic models in animals, characterizing cartilage-derived progenitors, and evaluating its potential implication for cartilage regeneration using in-vitro and in-vivo conditions. We hypothesize that a better understanding of these progenitors than other cell types will enable us to create a detailed biological profile and develop better approaches to treating cartilage pathologies.
In a proof of principle experiment, we observed that chondroprogenitors possess a higher chondrogenic potential and lower propensity for hypertrophy, indispensable in cartilage repair. Thus our primary focus is cartilage regeneration and joint preservation, using progenitors and assessing their efficiency in treating early-grade osteoarthritis and osteochondral defects, in addition to evaluating xeno-free alternatives, secretome characteristics, transcriptome mapping, and immunomodulation. The end goal is to establish translational research using cell isolates from the cartilage for the cartilage.
