A MoU was signed between the Department of Health and Family Welfare, Government of Odisha and the Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore / the Centre for Stem Cell Research (CSCR) (a unit of inStem, Bengaluru), on 5th December 2017. The aim of this collaboration is to develop and implement a population-based program for control of major haemoglobin disorders (thalassemia major and sickle cell disease) focused on reducing the burden of these diseases in the affected communities. Apart from developing a program for reducing the burden of these diseases in the State through preventive strategies, CMC / CSCR will help to enhance capabilities in the State with regard to diagnosis and treatment of patients with these diseases including curative options such as stem cell transplantation.
This collaboration was established under the program for ‘Control of thalassemia and sickle cell disease’ which is part of major grant for ‘Novel Approaches to Hematological Diseases (NAHD)’ being implemented at CSCR / CMC within the umbrella of the larger grant titled ‘Accelerating applications of Stem cell technology in Human Disease (ASHD)’ supported by the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Govt. of India.
